La Terrain
Recreational
Known as the Historical Capital of the Philippines, Cavite is also home to many destinations to take a break from the bustling metro and reconnect with nature. The project is situated in a sloped site with a cool and comfortable microclimate caused by the abundance of flora. With the aim of contributing to saving our environment and create a destination where users can reflect and tap their inner selves through nature, the team pursued a different take in recognizing the challenges present on the site and in the community, seeing them as opportunities to produce a cohesive design solution, specifically in addressing environmental impacts and helping the province exude its eccentric charm and appeal kept long below the radar.
Designing the existing site of La Terrain presented several challenges which needed resolution to provide a sustainable tourism destination. These limitations allowed for some of the most creative design solutions. The sloping topography and pre-existing structures were instrumental to the unique morphology of the project, consisting of thoughtful planning in context to existing features, emphasizing the preservation of the natural environment in tandem with quality indoor and outdoor spaces.
As the design goal aims to assimilate a space that doesn't overwhelm the natural scenery, the landscape shaped the introduction of these new spaces into the environment to enhance the guests' connection with nature while introducing its own architectural identity. Choosing raw materials was essential to building the character of La Terrain, from the grain of wood to the bareness of the concrete. Since the guests' experience is of utmost priority, La Terrain was designed to give users the impression of "getting lost to find oneself." This means creating spaces that encourage reflection, recreational activities, connecting with others, and being in tune with nature, all while maintaining the balance between openness and privacy.
Ultimately, the framework of La Terrain as a sustainable tourism destination hinge on its ability to balance the guests' needs and the preservation of the natural environment. La Terrain presents the opportunity of becoming a one-of-a-kind destination that provides a unifying and immersive experience for guests.
